Playing with perspectives can open up opportunties

Evan tapped into his experience as a rock climber to rethink his beliefs around his career

After a gruelling few years, Evan needed to decide whether to double down on his current role or step back and re-prioritise.

During our work together, Evan made the difficult decision to leave his CEO role, unsure what would come next, but knowing he wanted to spend more time with his young children and support his wife’s career.

Resigning and leaving the team was not an easy thing to do. With Evan’s army background, loyalty has always been a strong value along with the belief that failure is not an option.

Coaching allows you the space to challenge your thinking and reframe your perspectives. The question then becomes: loyalty to whom? To a company, to yourself, to your family, to your values?

Using the metaphor of a rock climber, Evan was able to reframe his choice to leave not as failure, but as a recalibration. As a climber, if your first choice of route doesn’t work, you go back down, strategise, and try again, taking it one hold at a time. You go slow, you think and test before you move, and you never climb unsupported.

With this outlook, Evan was able to stay with the process and employ a level of detachment that allowed him to negotiate a good outcome for himself and his team.

He is now honouring his values of growth, connection, and freedom, working with two Army buddies. Their consulting company focuses on imparting learning from their military and corporate experiences.
